Machines' Theory |
Machine : It is an apparatus which is used for applying mechanical power. That has a number of interrelated
parts, each having a definite function.
Kinematics of Machines : It deals with relative motion between the parts, neglecting the consideration of the
force.
Kinematic Link : It is a resistant body or assembly of resistant bodies which constitutes the part of a
mechanism. It is the smallest element of the machine which transmits motion or other links. A resistant body does
not change its physical form by the application of forces.
Link : Every part of a machine having motion which is relative to some other part.
Lower Pair : A pair is called lower pair when two links have surface or area contact between them while in
motion. The relative motion in a lower pair is either purely turning or sliding.
Higher Pair : A pair is called higher pair when two links have point or line contact between them while in
motion. The relative motion in higher pair is a combination of sliding and turning.
Kinematic Pair : A pair is called kinematic pair when two kinematic links are joined in such a way that the
relative motion between them is completely or successfully constrained.
